St. Xavier's H.S. School, Palayamkottai

Fr.M. Marianayagam, S.J., was the Headmaster of the School. He started coaching classes for the weak students of the S.S.L.C, Fr. Thomas Thundyil, S.J. was the principal of the Training College. He was a meticulous chronicler and narrator.

Fr. Arul Joseph, S.J. became the Headmaster in 1959. He took an active part in the affairs of the Tirunelveli district Teacher’s Guild and assumed office as its president.

 

When Fr.M. Mariarethinam, S.J. was the headmaster of the school, the payment of salary to the school staff completely by the Government was introduced. He tried to enforce strict discipline in every sphere. He opened an English medium section in the 6th standard to begin with and entrusted the teaching of science and social studies to graduate trained teachers.

In 1965, Fr.D. Arockiam, S.J., was the Headmaster of the school. An Inter-Act Club was started, and it functioned under a guide from the school and a representative from the Rotary Club of Palayamkottai. It was to instill a spirit of service, which served to achieve the goal of education.

In 1967, Fr.J.M. Lourduraj, S.J. became Headmaster. His period was as smooth as ever at the start and turned rough towards the end. The department brought in a change in the system of education. Social studies was dropped, and history and geography were re-introduced. The students had to study one more subject of their choice-an elective. He paid attention to the physical education too, and the school won a pride of place in the district in sports and games. He re-introduced scouting.

In 1971 High School was affected only marginally by the problems in the college others tried very much to get the school students into the fray. Fr. Lourduraj, Headmaster, was able to keep a fairly good control over students. Now and then the School students also turned unruly and joined the strikes.

In 1977, Fr. Lourdu John, S.J. was the principal of SXC. He was very simple and touchingly modest. In 1978, St. Xavier’s High School was upgraded into Higher Secondary School and the plus two systems commenced. During the academic years 1979-82, Higher Secondary students were accommodated in Britto Hostel.

 

The Centenary Celebrations of the School: 1980-81

On September 8, 1980 after the Eucharist by Fr.L. John, Rector, Fr.Moumas, S.J. blessed the foundation stone for an eight rooms building to be in memory of Fr. Verdier. In anticipation of the Centenary celebrations, competitions in co-curricular activities at he inter School level were conducted. November 30 was the thanks-giving day of the Centenary celebrations, which commenced with the Concelebrated Mass lead by Most Rev. Marianus Arockiasamy, Bishop of Kottar. The Collector of Tirunelveli declared open a well-prepared exhibition. In the evening there was a public function presided over by our former students Thiru S.N. Rajendran, Hon’ble Minister for Handloom and Pon Paramaguru, IPS.



The 2nd day was dedicated to teachers, parents and former students. The Concelebrated Mass was officiated by Rev Fr. A. Pai, S.J. and Provincial of Madurai Jesuit Province. A seminar on `Motivation in education’ was organized for the teachers. The evening function was presided over by the Hon’ble Minister for industries. The final day was the Centenary day with the Concelebrated Mass by Most Rev. S. Irudayaraj, Bishop of Palayamkottai. In the evening Dr. Sivagnanam, the Hon’ble Speaker released the souvenir.

 

In 1982 Fr.A. Felix Joseph, S.J. was the Headmaster of the School. He had the divine quality to forgive and forget and elected genuine love from the staff towards duly. The staff fondly remembered his administration as’ Golden period’ for the School.

 

In 1984, Fr. Alphonse William, S.J., became the Headmaster of the School. He instilled in the students to be’ men for others’ by conducting coaching classes by students themselves.



In 1986, M.Phil Mathematics and B.Sc. Computer Science were started. A well-equipped computer center was established in St. Xavier’s College.

 

In 1987, Fr. J.L. Pragasam, S.J., was the Headmaster of the School. He was an able administrator, and by his hard work he succeeded to get the maximum from the staff. A grand stage was constructed by his efforts.

 

In 1996, Fr. Albert Joseph, S.J., became the Headmaster of the School. He took lot of interests on sports and games. He safeguarded the School playground by raising the compound wall.

 

Fr.a. Muthumalai, Rector blessed the foundation stone for the new classrooms in the school on October 7, 1998. It was initiated by Fr. Albert Joseph, Headmaster and agreed that one half of the expense would be borne by the students and staff. The building was dedicated to the first Jesuit Headmaster Fr. Saldanha, and blessed by Rev Fr.D. Jeyaraj, Provincial on the day of the Platinum Jubilee Celebration of St. Xavier’s College.

 

Fr. Albert Joseph, S.J., Headmaster blessed the Northern arched gateway and the new entrance to the School on November 16, 1999 and the architect was Br. R. Jesudas, S.J.,

 

In June 2000, Fr.N. Ignatius Britto, S.J became the Headmaste of the School. He was affable and started to put things in order. He blessed the Southern arched gateway and the main entrance to the School on June 1, 2000 along with the former Headmaster.
